Needs, Wants And Demands In Marketing

Needs, Wants And Demands In Marketing

In marketing, needs, wants, and demands refer to different levels of consumer interest in a product or service.

  1. Needs: These are basic necessities that consumers require to survive, such as food, clothing, and shelter. These needs are driven by physiological and safety factors.
  2. Wants: These are desires that consumers have for specific products or services that go beyond their basic needs. For example, a consumer may need food, but they may want a specific brand or type of food. Wants are influenced by personal, social, and cultural factors.
  3. Demands: These are the quantity of a product or service that consumers are willing and able to purchase at a given price. Demand is influenced by the combination of needs and wants, as well as by a consumer’s budget and purchasing power.

Marketing efforts usually focus on identifying and fulfilling consumer wants and demands, as these are the areas where businesses can generate revenue by offering solutions to satisfy their needs. Understanding the difference between needs wants, and demands are important for businesses, as it helps them to identify potential areas for growth and to develop effective marketing strategies to reach their target consumers.

For example, if a company wants to sell a new product it could use market research to identify what are the consumer’s needs in terms of functionality, design, or price and then use that information to shape their product to better serve the market, or if a company wants to increase the sales of its product it could use marketing campaigns to increase the demand by showcasing the unique features of the product and how it fulfills the consumers wants and needs.
